ABOUT

With 15+ years of playing and 10+ years of coaching experience, Matt’s hockey journey began in Welland, Ontario.

Matt played minor hockey from ages 5 to 17, spending 3 years between the pipes for the Welland Jr. Canadians. Recognizing goaltending as a critical aspect of team play, he was fascinated by the unique challenge of the position—where resilience, agility, and mental fortitude are just as crucial as technique.

After a rewarding playing career, this passion for goaltending led him to pursue a career where he could not only share but also expand his knowledge of this critical role on the ice. Matt was driven by a singular purpose: to guide and develop the next generation of goaltending talent.

Over the years, he’s had the privilege of working with goalies at various levels, helping them hone their skills, refine their techniques, and elevate their game. Most notably, he served as a goalie coach for the Southern Tier Admirals and the Welland Tigers.

Goaltending requires direct & consistent unique coaching skills.

Just as forwards and defenders get specific coaching for their respective positions, goalies require the same attention and guided skill development.

Coaching Philosophy

Matt’s coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that great goaltending is built on a foundation of three core elements: technical skill, mental toughness, and physical conditioning. He is committed to a personalized coaching approach, understanding that each goalie possesses a unique set of strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. By fostering a supportive and challenging environment, he aims to push goalies beyond their comfort zones, while ensuring they remain confident and composed under pressure.

Matt emphasizes the importance of fundamentals, such as stance, movement, and positioning, while also integrating advanced techniques and strategies tailored to the modern game.

Commitment to Development

What sets Matt apart as a goaltending coach is his unwavering commitment to the continuous development of his athletes. By following the latest coaching methodologies and trends in goaltending, Matt ensures that his coaching remains dynamic and effective.

To my goalies, I am more than a coach; I am a mentor, a confidant, and a staunch supporter, dedicated to their growth not just as athletes, but as individuals. Whether you’re a young goalie just starting out or an experienced netminder looking to take your game to the next level, I invite you to join me on this journey of goaltending excellence.

Together, we can achieve greatness on and off the ice.”
